This page will celebrate Dr. Mark Cooney whose marriage to Margaret Blake produced eight children and a dynasty in its own right.  The family became prominent in medicine, law, diplomacy and national politics with ramifications which will redound to the benefit of Ireland for many generations.

1.4.2.1 MARK COONEY Son of John and Bridget (Meehan) Cooney (1.4.2). He became a doctor and is shown in uniform in the Gurteenboy wedding photo. He was a Major in the IRA and Head Medical Officer of the Western Command.  In civilian life he practiced medicine and was Chief Medical Officer of Cavan.  He married Margaret Blake and they had eight children.  His beloved wife Margaret died an untimely death, and Dr. Cooney subsequently married a second time, to Agnes.  Mark and Margaret had eight children, John, Mary, Patrick, Christine, Garrett, Agnes, Fintan and Gemma.

..........1.4.2.1.1 John Cooney, born 1926, son of Mark and Margaret Cooney.  He was educated at  St Vincent's College, Castleknock, Co. Dublin and University College, Dublin.  He is a Medical Doctor and married Patricia Huggard, Waterville, County Kerry.   John and Patricia have six children, Leonora, Mark, Susan, Rachel, John, and Patricia.

..........1.4.2.1.2 Mary Cooney, born 1928, daughter of Mark and Margaret Cooney.  She was educated at Loretto College, Cavan and University College, Dublin.  Mary is a Medical Doctor.
 
..........1.4.2.1.3 Patrick Cooney, born 1931, son of Mark and Margaret Cooney. He was educated at St Vincent's College, Castleknock, Co. Dublin and University College, Dublin.  He is a Solicitor. Patrick campaigned with his uncle Sean MacEoin as he ran for his seat in the Dail and for his campaigns for the Presidency of Ireland. Thus began a prolific life in law, politics and diplomacy. Patrick soon sought and won his own seat representing Longford/Westmeath. Subsequently he was named Minister of Justice for Ireland, and later, Ireland's delegate to the EU Congress. Under his leadership, Ireland became a member of the EU, and the country's economy was transformed as a result. Patrick is retired from politics, but continues to practice law in Athlone. He married Bridget McMenamin from Tamney, County Donegal and they have four children, Mark, Michael, Edward and Catherine Cooney.

..........1.4.2.1.4 Christine Cooney, born 1933, daughter of Mark and Margaret Cooney.   Christine is an educator in the Domestic Science curriculum.  She attended Loretto College, Cavan and Edinburgh College of Domestic Science in Edinburgh Scotland.

..........1.4.2.1.5 Garrett Cooney, born 1935, son of Mark and Margaret Cooney.  He was educated at St Vincent's College, Castleknock, Co. Dublin and University College, Dublin.  Garrett is a Barrister, and married Sheila Gillan, from Droheda, County Louth.   He has been active and prominent in law and politics.  He and Sheila have three children, Garrett, Steven, and Kevin.

..........1.4.2.1.6 Agnes Cooney, born 1936, daughter of Mark and Margaret Cooney.  Agnes is a Dental Surgeon and supports an active and busy practice. She was educated at Loretto Abbey, Rathfarnham, Dublin and received her professional medical and dental training at the College of Surgeons, Dublin.

..........1.4.2.1.7 Fintan Cooney, born 1938, son of Mark and Margaret Cooney.  He is a Veterinary Surgeon with a varied and successful practice.  Fintan married Mary Creedon of Dublin. He was educated at St Vincent's College, Castleknock, County Dublin and University College, Dublin.  He and Mary have six children, Fintan, Michael, Elizabeth, Alice, Patrick, and Nial. 
 
..........1.4.2.1.8 Gemma Cooney, born 1940, daughter of Mark and Margaret Cooney. Gemma trained as a Social Worker and has a fulfilling career in that field.  She was educated at Loretto Abbey, Rathfarnham, Dublin and University College, Dublin.  She married Frank Rowley of Dublin, and they have five children, Margaret, Thomas, Ellen, Dominic, John.
